Do you think Singapore Airlines should have the rights to fly to Toronto again?

In 1994, the Canadian Government stripped off Singapore Airlines' (SIA) rights to land in Toronto Pearson Int'l Airport because Air Canada complained SIA was stealing its business. Thus SIA is only allowed to fly to Vancouver 3x weekly. I feel this is unfair, just because SIA is a better airline than Air Canada, does not mean a national carrier can complain to its home government. Have they ever heard of the word called "competition"? I think they're complaining because they cannot face it. Now they don't even fly to Singapore! So they really ought to change their minds about this. Do you agree?Do you think Singapore Airlines should have the rights to fly to Toronto again?
I think Air Canada never did fly to Singapore from Toronto? Their complaint against SIA was about the European routes. SIA was flying Toronto to Singapore via European cities (eg Amsterdam), and that cut into Air Canada's transatlantic business. SIA is allowed to do that in the US, flying New York to Singapore via Frankfurt, and offering a good option for Americans traveling to Europe.

Now that SIA has bought new planes that can fly Singapore to Toronto nonstop over north pole (back in 1994, planes had to refuel), I don't see why they should not be allowed to land in Toronto from that side. But then that's probably not a lucrative route.
Both airlines are now actually part of the Star Alliance and are partners!

YYZ to YVR both AC or Westjet cost appr. C$500 RT (discounted); to travel to Asia via the US not only big headache due to US' TSA screening but also for those non Canadian is the US Visa requirement. The best route for SQ: SIN-YVR-YYZ

yea they should allow SQ to fly to toronto again and SQ needs to add more destinations cause they have like only 65 i think i hope SQ increases to at least 80 destinations next time
Your contraticting yourslef there.

you say that Air Canada should listen to a 'thing called competition' then you say that Air Canada dont fly to Singapore. So if SIngapore Airlines were to start flying to YYZ again, there is no competition!

I dont know what the situation is over there (im in Australia) but I do know that it doesnt cost much at all to fly from Toronto to Vancouver, then jump on a Singapore flight....

write to your local, federal political figure and see if they respond....or see them in their office.

it may just be that there is no demand anymore.
i think its not only SIA, but all asian airlines (malaysia airlines, thai airways, garuda indonesia, air china.. and most of them) are restricted to land at canada.. all they can go is america.. maybe canada is not asian friendly...

just why they dont want these airlines to enter their airport??? must be something...

hey, Air Canada also didnt land at Kuala Lumpur..

that is so obvious right???

-edit-

found that air china allowed to enter canada by March 2009
Simply yes. If Singapore Airlines start operating then perhaps later Air Canada will. I Know Canadian used to fly diret into Bangkok and I know from my Thai Airways 'history' that they used to also fly to Toronto, I think via Seattle.

The more competition there is the more competative the fares.
