Sorry I can't be more specific, but on average how much would a modest, decent apartment in downtown Toronto Cost? It doesn't have to be in a ritsy area, just that I'm close enough to everything. It doesn't have to be a palace, but not complete garbage. A livable, cozy place, one bedroom. I heard they can be expensive. How much would an apartment in downtown Toronto generally cost?
It really depends on what part of "downtown" you mean. At the least I would say in the mid 1000s but it can get pretty expensive!

What is the cheapest way to travel from Chicago to Toronto?

I'm planning to go to Toronto. It may be as soon as late August. What is the cheapest way to travel? Flying is out b/c it costs too much. Should I take Greyhound or Amtrak?

I'm staying with my friend once I'm in Toronto so I don't need a hostel or anything like that...just have to get there.

Thanks in advance for the help (-:What is the cheapest way to travel from Chicago to Toronto?

Amtrak is pretty cheep comped to Flying and greyhound and that it is relay nice way to travel get up at any time more than one bathroom they have bigger seats and lots leg room most of any other means of transportation. most people I know who have taken Amtrak and greyhound really like Amtrak a lot more.
Take the train. I just happen to be going to Toronto this Friday and looked into taking the train (I ended up buying a flight to Buffalo and I have a Toronto friend picking me up). The train is a lot less than flying. But it will take a day ore more. For instance if you leave on a Thursday morning, you won't get there until Friday afternoon or so, so plan accordingly. Or if your friend can pick you up in Buffalo, you can get a ticket for as low as $75 each way. Toronto is an hour and a half or more from Buffalo, not that far away. If you do choose to go to Buffalo and have a friend pick you up, bring your passport. You'll need it to get into Canada. Heck, bring it even if you go straight to Toronto. You'll need it.What is the cheapest way to travel from Chicago to Toronto?
i'm not sure if amtrak goes to toronto or not, i believe greyhoud does,

go to their websites to find out.

if you have an option, AMTRAK, by a long shot, way better form of transportaiton, and it usually is just a little bit more to ride the train than the bus.
    hitchhike
walk...kidding. I think the train probably is PLUS it would be lots of fun!

Do Toronto restaurants let you bring your own birthday cake?

I'm planning a birthday dinner in Toronto and i was wondering if most restaurants let you bring your own birthday cake in?Do Toronto restaurants let you bring your own birthday cake?
I don't know a thing about the restaurants in Toronto, but most restaurants everywhere will let you bring your own cake in. I don't think anyone would have a problem with it.
most will, but yeah call ahead of time. they'll appreciate that. some charge, some don't. i work as a pastry chef at a restaurant and we get cake brought in pretty often.Do Toronto restaurants let you bring your own birthday cake?
    No
i don't think so. call ahead and ask.
I always call ahead first and ask if this is acceptable, if not then I will make arrangements to use what the restaurant has. But if this is something special like for a extra large crowd or something different like a flavor the restaurant does not provide usually there is no problem.
Pick a restaurant you'd like to go to, then phone and ask. How hard is that?
Most restaurants will allow it, but some will charge a "plating fee" since they would ideally like you to buy dessert. It's usually a few bucks per person, or a flat fee. Never too much, but it's fair considering you're bringing in outside food.
I live here and I've never had a problem. Most of them are happy to oblige. If you have any concerns about a particular place, call them and clear it with them first. Get the name of the person so you have recourse.

How to reach crimsonking circle, l5n8m9 from Toronto coach terminal ?

How can I reach Crimson king Circle, Mississauga, ON from Toronto Coach Terminal [probably situated at 610 Bay Street] ? Is there public transportation SubWay or Bus available ? Any idea how much it will cost ?

Thank you.How to reach crimsonking circle, l5n8m9 from Toronto coach terminal ?
Crimson King Circle is within walking distance of Lisgar GO station. If you are travelling there on a weekday after 11 AM, you can take the GO train (during afternoon rush hour) or bus (other times) from Union Station. To get there from the Toronto Coach Terminal, take the 6 Bay bus south to Front. Travel time from Union to Lisgar varies - 47 minutes on the train, 60-70 on the bus. TTC fare is $2.75, and GO fare is $7.

If you are travelling there on a weekend or holiday, or you don't want to take GO, then walk over to St Patrick station, and take the Yonge-University-Spadina subway north to St George. Go downstairs and take the Bloor-Danforth subway west to Islington. Transfer to Mississauga Transit route 1 west to Wolfedale, then take MT route 38 north to Lisgar GO. TTC fare is $2.75 as before, and Mississauga bus fare is $3. This is a very long trip - pretty close to 3 hours.

Is 2 and a half hours enough to get from Toronto Pearson to LAX?

I booked a flight in 3 weeks (early Aug) flying from Toronto at 8:05 and I need to be in LA by 8:30 AM pst or 11:30 AM toronto time for a business meeting.

Is this possible? The flight has be be around 2 and a half hours for me to make that.Is 2 and a half hours enough to get from Toronto Pearson to LAX?
    Impossible -

The flight time YYZ to LAX is 4:30 hrs long -

You want to be in L.A. at 08:30(am) you better fly the night before -

And where in hell is your meeting in L.A. ?

Wait 45 minutes in the baggage claim area for your suitcase ?

Then a 30 minutes cab ride to where you go ?
The answers that have indicated that this is impossible are correct -- you're looking at a flight time of close to 5 hours for this city pair, meaning that a 8:05 flight wouldn't arrive in Los Angeles until about 10:00 am in Los Angeles, well after your meeting would be starting. (In fact, you really should have known the answer to this already when you bought your ticket -- the departure and arrival times, which are local to those respective cities, should have clearly been listed on the itinerary you selected.)

You really need to change your ticket and fly in the previous day for your early morning meeting. Not only is this because the time you've set for your travel is completely unrealistic with respect to making your meeting on time, any delays in the outbound flight from Toronto will only make things worse. By leaving the day before, you can absorb some of the time you'd lose in the event of unforeseen delays and ensure that you make it to your meeting on time.Is 2 and a half hours enough to get from Toronto Pearson to LAX?
Sorry, but that is %26lt;%26lt;completely%26gt;%26gt; impossible.

I looked at flights that leave YYZ for LAX, and the flight time is listed in Kayak.com and right around 5 hours. The arrival time in LAX if you leave at 8:05 am will be between 10 and 10:30 am.

As far as I can tell, there are no flights from YYZ that will allow you to arrive in LA any earlier than about 10 am. Looks like you will need to go the night before and book a hotel room.
Definitely not going to happen. What you should have done was buy a ticket and arrive the night before the meeting. You will have to call and change the ticket. When buying the ticket, the website would tell you what time you would arrive and you would have known that the flight is longer than 2.5 hours.
You should check out the departure time and arival times on your flihght information. If you dont have a sheet with your flight information you can go to either the website of your airline, or of either LAX or Toronto Pearson.

    Good Luck! Have Fun!
It'll be awfully close. There could delays, especially during a peak travel time in the morning. You also have to allow for time to get from the airport to your meeting location. I might consider booking an earlier flight.
It's a 5 1/2-6-hour flight from YYZ to LAX (make it 1-2 times per year).

    Not gonna happen.

What do i have to do to become a theoretical physicist in Scarborough, Toronto, Ontario?

I have always kept this as a goal in my life, but I have trouble choosing a good path. I am currently in grade 11 in high school. Can someone please tell me what subjects to take and what clubs to join in high school?

After high school I plan on getting into University of Toronto, but I don't know what subjects to take. It would be really helpful if someone gave me a detailed answer.

Thank You!What do i have to do to become a theoretical physicist in Scarborough, Toronto, Ontario?
Go to college and major in physics. Take a lot of math and computer science classes as well. Spend your summers doing research at your school or others to make sure you actually like doing research and you're good at it. Then you've got 4-8 years of graduate school, 2-6 more of postdocs, and then you can try applying for a job. Theoretical physics might sound cool when you're in high school, but experimentalists make a lot more money and have an easier time finding jobs.

You are very smart to check out Board Certified Plastic/Cosmetic Surgeons. You can also call the College of Physicians %26amp; Surgeons, %26amp; they will tell you if there has been a complaint agains the Dr. or not. They won't go into details, but it will give you an idea. When speaking to the prospective Dr., ask how many procedures they've done with regard to the one you want. Check on the reputation of the clinic. If you go for a consultation, pay attention to the Dr's attitude. If he brushes you off when you ask questions, you may want to think twice about him doing the procedure. The Dr. should be willing to explain the procedure, the expected outcome, %26amp; whatever risks are involved. Don't be fooled that a cheaper price will get you what you want. Remember, everyone is different so what one person experiences as a side-effect, another person will not, etc.etc.
By the way...seek out a Dr. who specializes in Cosmetic/Plastic Surgery. You don't want an E.N.T., or a Cardiac Surgeon. etc. In other words, you don't go to a heart specialist if you complain about your periods. lol

It's one of your typical heteronormative towns with roads, gas stations and a total lack of diversion to make one forget that they're living in Washington, you'll, therefore, be likely to find the exact same thing if you go to Hanover, Ontario. Though, I don't see why you'd want to follow the characters of a 2nd rate novel anyway.

Same as any city. Depends how friendly you are. I just couldn't go up to someone in a library or a park and go "what's your name? would you like to be my friend?" but ppl gather there, and at the beach and in coffee houses etc. Try putting an ad on Toronto's Craigslist, "stritcly platonic" because it's hard to make friends in the streets unless you bump into someone cool by accident and you have stuff in common. Otherwise try joining a club/group/organization of stuff you're passionate about.

What strains do immigrants place on the economy of Toronto?

More people immigrate to Canada than any "other" country, and most of these immigrants come to the GTA, especially the city of Toronto. What strains does this place on the economy of Toronto? What strains do immigrants place on the economy of Toronto?
They tend to have an adverse effect on the average wages of Canadians. More immigrants, means more people willing to work for less, and that is exactly what businesses do.
Actually I don't know that more people immigrate to Canada than any "other" country. (What the heck are the quotes there for?) It may be that per capita Canada accepts more immigrants than any other country.

Yes immigrants do tend to settle in cities, especially Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal. There are strains for sure, the Toronto school system has real ESL funding problems. That is only part of the funding problem - aging infrastructure matters too, and provincial government under Mike Harris matters more.

Do not fall into the assumption that all immigrants are arriving in rags and ignorant. Many arrive with an excellent command of English, a professional job and sufficient funds to purchase a downtown house. They place no strain on the economy, they enhance it.What strains do immigrants place on the economy of Toronto?

  • What school is better for American students, University of Toronto or University of British Columbia?

I am an American student and I am planning on either applying to University of Toronto or the University of British Columbia. I was wondering which was a better school both academically and socially. Does anyone know? Also, which is a better city Toronto or Vancouver? What school is better for American students, University of Toronto or University of British Columbia?
UBC hands down. And you won't freeze your butt off as bad at UBC. To give you an idea of coolness, consider that UBC has a nude beach. Yet UBC is academically still one of Canada's top schools.

My daughter took her freshman year at the coolest school in Canada, Simon Fraser in a suburb of Vancouver. Myself I lived in Vancouver for 20 years and only left as I was offered a job in LA.

Vancouver is one of the coolest places on earth. And yes, you can go sailing and skiing the same day there.

Toronto is Buffalo but bigger and cleaner.

Also in Vancouver, you are only about 40 km from the US border and there are so many US license plates around, no one will care you are an American.

I am a former chef and live in Toronto, there are a number of food shops and gourmet places around, I have seen them in my A%26amp;P here at Spadina and Bloor, in a cheese shop down the street near Brunswick, there are Dutch specialty stores in the city and a few Scandinavian places on Lawrence St east near Leaside.

What is a good school in toronto that is strong academically?

Hi guys i want a public high school in toronto that is strong in acedemics.

Sorry, It has to be a public high school!!!What is a good school in toronto that is strong academically?
None, go somewhere else. The high school teachers in Ontario only cares about their own paycheque and nothing else. Don't believe me? Look at the latest news: they're planning to strike over small things like walking around and being hall monitors to ensure the kids' safety. If you want a good school, go to the expensive private ones.
I go to a private school. but i certainly have heard of some good ones.

North Toronto Collegiate is perhaps the most famous. i think they have the top EQAO scores or something. Ive just heard numerous times that its the best public high school in Toronto. I know people who dont live in that neighbourhood but still apply to it from across toronto. What is a good school in toronto that is strong academically?

How long does a average winter last in Toronto?

This is my first winter in Toronto and I am wondering how long it will last? How cold does it get? Is it warmer than Calgary, AB? How much snow does Toronto get?How long does a average winter last in Toronto?
During winter in Toronto the temperature falls up to -40 degree celceus.average winter in Toronto

lasts for 4 to 6 months.
Calgary gets Colder than Toronto, but Toronto does get cold, coldest Temperature ever recorded in Toronto was -33c (-27F) Winters usually start in November and end in April due to Seasonal Drag.

Snow can Fall anytime from October to May. Accumulating Snow can Fall anytime from November to mid April. Coldest Temperature in June was 0c (32F) Coldest in July was 3c (37F) Coldest in August was 1c (33F) Those values were Recorded in the City. In the Suburbs it gets colder. How long does a average winter last in Toronto?
Winter in Toronto is more of a fashion statement. Much warmer than Calgary, Should last until the end of march. Statistically the average temp in Toronto during winter is -3C. As long as I have lived in Toronto, it doesn't get much snow, and when it does it doesn't last long. When we do get a lot of snow though this town gets crazy. We truly have one of the milder winters in Canada.
I haven`t visited Toronto many times in the winter. The last winter (and only winter I really remember in Toronto) I spent in Toronto was two years ago. While I was there, there was quite a bit of snow. Without a doubt it is warmer than Calgary. I wouldn`t know how long the average winter lasts or how cold it gets.
i live in toronto and it doesn't snow alot. average winter lasts from mid november to mid march or april. but there's always rain and snow so you don't see alot of snow in winter.
it lasts for 4-6 months, usually from November till early-April, but it is not always very-very cold, the weather can be mild sometimes.
it depends what part of the gta u in last 5 to 6 motnhs enjoy its my second and it bad when taking the bust at 6 to go skull

Are there temp agencies in Toronto that specialize in factory placements?

I used to work for Bridge Staffing in Brantford as a part time packaging worker, and am trying to find something similar in Toronto. I'm looking for something that would allow me to call in and ask for work each day, or that would call me to offer work each day.

Googling is mostly leading me to administration-oriented agencies.

Help is appreciated! Are there temp agencies in Toronto that specialize in factory placements?
Companies have to pay the agencies a fee for placements. Factories don't need agencies, they have all the applicants they want lined up at their door. Be your own agency, seek out employment possibilities.

  • Do you think Singapore Airlines should have the rights to fly to Toronto again?

In 1994, the Canadian Government stripped off Singapore Airlines' (SIA) rights to land in Toronto Pearson Int'l Airport because Air Canada complained SIA was stealing its business. Thus SIA is only allowed to fly to Vancouver 3x weekly. I feel this is unfair, just because SIA is a better airline than Air Canada, does not mean a national carrier can complain to its home government. Have they ever heard of the word called "competition"? I think they're complaining because they cannot face it. Now they don't even fly to Singapore! So they really ought to change their minds about this. Do you agree?Do you think Singapore Airlines should have the rights to fly to Toronto again?
I think Air Canada never did fly to Singapore from Toronto? Their complaint against SIA was about the European routes. SIA was flying Toronto to Singapore via European cities (eg Amsterdam), and that cut into Air Canada's transatlantic business. SIA is allowed to do that in the US, flying New York to Singapore via Frankfurt, and offering a good option for Americans traveling to Europe.

Now that SIA has bought new planes that can fly Singapore to Toronto nonstop over north pole (back in 1994, planes had to refuel), I don't see why they should not be allowed to land in Toronto from that side. But then that's probably not a lucrative route.
Both airlines are now actually part of the Star Alliance and are partners!

YYZ to YVR both AC or Westjet cost appr. C$500 RT (discounted); to travel to Asia via the US not only big headache due to US' TSA screening but also for those non Canadian is the US Visa requirement. The best route for SQ: SIN-YVR-YYZ

yea they should allow SQ to fly to toronto again and SQ needs to add more destinations cause they have like only 65 i think i hope SQ increases to at least 80 destinations next time
    Your contraticting yourslef there.

you say that Air Canada should listen to a 'thing called competition' then you say that Air Canada dont fly to Singapore. So if SIngapore Airlines were to start flying to YYZ again, there is no competition!

I dont know what the situation is over there (im in Australia) but I do know that it doesnt cost much at all to fly from Toronto to Vancouver, then jump on a Singapore flight....

write to your local, federal political figure and see if they respond....or see them in their office.

it may just be that there is no demand anymore.
i think its not only SIA, but all asian airlines (malaysia airlines, thai airways, garuda indonesia, air china.. and most of them) are restricted to land at canada.. all they can go is america.. maybe canada is not asian friendly...

just why they dont want these airlines to enter their airport??? must be something...

hey, Air Canada also didnt land at Kuala Lumpur..

    that is so obvious right???

    -edit-

found that air china allowed to enter canada by March 2009
Simply yes. If Singapore Airlines start operating then perhaps later Air Canada will. I Know Canadian used to fly diret into Bangkok and I know from my Thai Airways 'history' that they used to also fly to Toronto, I think via Seattle.

The more competition there is the more competative the fares.

Is there much work in toronto for a 22 year old australian male?

im currently living in banff and looking to head over to toronto to work for a while. Is there much work over there and what kind of work should i be looking for? Would it be hard for me to find work in montreal knowing no french? Is there much work in toronto for a 22 year old australian male?
There is work in Toronto, likely more than what's offered in Banff. Work varies from sector to sector - industrial, financial, retail.

Montreal is great too, but the majority of jobs will require you to speak French. I had a friend who moved to Montreal and didn't speak a word of French and found a job after a few months of searching, but it was with an international company. There aren't many jobs that are non-bilingual.

Google job search engines, like workopolis, monster, jobsboom or toronto jobs - they will give you an idea of what's out there at this time. Good luck!

Check out these links and just filter to Toronto:

What mark do you have to have to get to university of Toronto?

I am currently in grade ten in every subject I have a mark from 80% to 95% but since my first language is not English I have 72%, I am planning to go to University of Toronto to major there in business. What mark should I have in English, I am nervous? What mark do you have to have to get to university of Toronto?
As long as your TOTAL combined average is over 80%, you should be fine. You just need a 70% in English. But your other marks are definitely have to going to be high to make up for that 70.

Also, when you apply to university, you apply using applications on OUAC (google it). There's a section where you can mention that English isn't your first language. That should help in some way.

    Hope this helps,
    Good luck!

    Click on housing, and you'll be able to setup a filter on the left hand side of the page to include/exclude;

    - No. of rooms

    - Which part of Toronto you are looking for

    - Distance from Toronto (I usually set mine at 25KM)

    - People offering or wanted

If you're looking for a loft, you might also want to include "loft" in the search engine at the top of the page. Make sure "housing" or one of it's sub categories is selected.

Another really good resource is http://www.mls.ca/splash.aspx This has a better search engine IMO.

If they aren't sold out and you buy straight from ticketmaster or whatever, 60-150. If they're sold out, you're looking to pay 200-500$ for a pair of good tickets off of someone whos selling, from what I've seen so far. Try craigslist or something like that. How much will it cost in Canadian to go see a Toronto FC vs. Los Angeles Galaxy game in Toronto?
Well, it's really hard to score tickets at the BMO field in the first place. Season tickets are already sold out, so there aren't many seats available.

Seperate tickets areworth around 60-120 depending on where you want the seating.

I'm sure if you searched google you'll find some people trying to get sell some tickets.

They Greyhound bus is a good option. Schedules and fares are at http://greyhound.ca/. Trip times are between 1 hours 20 minutes and 2 hours 10 minutes depending on the time of day. An adult web fare is $21.15.

I took this bus recently and wrote about it here: http://www.travelinpublic.com/2010/07/05鈥?/a> Be aware that once you get to Niagara Falls, ON, the bus station where you'll be dropped off is a few kilometers from the actual waterfalls. You can easily walk it though.
I would highly recommend renting a car and taking a detour to Niagara-on-the-Lake. It's a classy area with great restaurants, wonderful Canadian wineries, theatre and beautiful mansions. Avoid the cheesy casinos next to Niagara Falls. Don't get me wrong, you shouldn't miss the falls, but skip the kitsch!

I just went on a winery tour of the Niagara wine region--they're winning global awards for their boutique wines.

What is appropriate attire for Toronto weather in late November?

I will be traveling to Buffalo NY and Toronto on Thanksgiving weekend. I don't know what to wear. I know it will be very cold, but will it be blizzard cold? I am from sunny California, so this is new to me. Thanks! What is appropriate attire for Toronto weather in late November?
It has been a rather mild winter so far with above 0 temps just a couple of weeks ago it was 18 degrees celsius (about 35-45 F I believe). But that doesn't mean it will stay that way. You may want to bring some sweaters, long pants, layers, an umbrella and a jacket. Some times the weather can change with in a few minutes so be prepared for any thing. As for shoes, the time for sandals is long gone but you can still wear stylish runners or boots.

I live in Brampton Ontario, just outside of Toronto.
The end of November can be unpredictable - it can either be cool or downright cold. I would recommend you wearing a warmer coat, gloves or mittens and warmer shoes, boots if you like. I know last year the end of Nov was very cold with tons of snow but the year before it was actually mild outside. It is pretty unpredictable but I would bet on colder just to be safe. What is appropriate attire for Toronto weather in late November?
I don't think it will be blizzard cold, although it could snow, you will most likely see rain, but it will be cold and depending where you are in the city it can be windy too because some of the streets are like wind tunnels. Think layers, bring a medium weight coat or thick jacket, a sweater or hoodie, and a scarf..and maybe a hat.
I doubt it will snow just yet. There might be a chance of rain though.

Blizzard cold? No. Not unless there's a significant wind chill which will make the temperatures rise. Living in Cali this will be alot colder so just bring a nice warm coat, a scarf and warm clothing. There's no need for hats or gloves though unless you are the terribly-afraid-of-the-cold type. Hey it's not winter just YET! =]
Layers!!! More is better than not bringing enough! Sweaters ... jackets ... It will be blizzard cold most likely!!!

Thanks for any suggestions! What is something that a 17-year old girl can do in Toronto during the summer?
The official federal job search engine www.jobbank.gc.ca often has temporary summer jobs, you can try to find something for you.
There's a scholarship program in my state, and you need over 75 volunteer hours, so this summer I'm volunteering at an animal shelter with my friend! It's been really fun so far!! I've met quite a few new people, and a bunch are high school students working for the same scholarship hours! Maybe get a normal job, so you could get paid?! Work at a restaurant, store in the mall, cashier at the grocery store, or find unique jobs that not EVERY other teenager has! What is something that a 17-year old girl can do in Toronto during the summer?
Maybe you can hang out with me! :D
Maybe go to an all girls soccer academy.

Safest areas to live in the City of Toronto and Greater Toronto area?
I am a former chef and have lived here for 12 years off and on, and have never had any trouble, as to the areas you mentioned like the first young lady said as long as you don't have a bad background, get involved with the wrong people and stray into the areas where things can get rough after dark, then you are fine.

Etobicoke is nice and there are areas along Lakeshore Blvd, Islington Av and Bloor St with nice boutiques, restaurants shops, bakery's, good transit is available in both areas, alot depends on what your looking for and willing to spend on rent or if you looking at buying.
Compared to US cities, all of Toronto is considered safe. As long as you don't do anything stupid.

Better to ask which areas to avoid. It's a much shorter list.

If u want to use ur car Take 401 w upto Brampton highway (i forgot the name) they also posted brampton on Boards follow the sign and same way come back.

Off course this is not for peak hours 8 am to 10 am and 4.30 pm to 8.30pm
In the morning, the GO Train runs from Brampton to Union Station in Toronto in 40 minutes. You're unlikely to beat that time by car if you are travelling in the peak hours. Rest of the day, the GO Bus service takes about an hour. There's also GO Bus service to Yorkdale, connecting there with Toronto subway system. Good luck! How do i get to Toronto from Brampton fast?

What is there to do on the way to the Algonquin from Toronto?

Beyond Toronto itself, are there any places of interest on the general way to the Algonquin which may be worth visiting / overnighting at?What is there to do on the way to the Algonquin from Toronto?
It's just countryside and beautiful scenery between Toronto and Algonquin. There aren't really any other attractions. I'd just go for a slow drive and whenever see something that appeals to me, take a break and enjoy.
Depending on which way you are going from the T. to the golden land...you might want to stop in my old hometown county for a stop at the wolves, or few other attractions.

tonnes of good places to eat in that area too (Mill Pond in Carnarvon is my fave)What is there to do on the way to the Algonquin from Toronto?
Ok I can majorly help you with this. Start off by going up the 400 to Canada's wonderland, spend a few hours there. Then keep driving, up the 400, take it up until Bracebridge, then make a right onto Highway 118, and go across until you reach 35, you'll come out in a town called Canarvon, about 10 mins north, theres a nice waterfalls/trail called "Buttermilk Falls". Theres a place to park the car, and a nice trail along/down the rapids to Boskoung Lake, the trail isn't overly steep, but it's all rock and be quite slippery if the water is running high, the trail will take you down to Boskung Lake, and theres a nice view. After that go back up to your car keep driving along 35, until you reach Dorset. Theres a really nice restrauant called "The Fiery Grill", it's a got a lot of good southern foods (cajan style). Theres a general store across the bridge, you could always stop off there, or the frozen yogurt store down on the lake. Theres also a nice tower you can visit on top of "peekabo mountain". The hill is a 526 foot hill, theres 2 trails that will lead you up to the top, ones a safe trail, one's a "enter at your own risk trail". Park your car at the musuem, and theres a trail at the back (safe way), it's uphill, but not overly steep, it will snake it's way up to the top where theres a 102 foot tower. From the top of thw tower you can a gorgeous view of cottage country, and theres tons of wildlife you may encounter on the mountain. Wildlife you may see are: Deer, bears, wolves, foxes, chipmunks, bald eagles etc. It will take you a good hour to climb the hill, 20-30 mins to spend at the top, and another hour to come back down, that right there will kill a good 2-3 hours. Then from there you can drive to the park :)

We'd be leaving Saturday and returning on Sunday. Is there service from Yorkdale, or is Union my only option?

Thanks in advance! How do I get from Toronto to Bradford and back via GO transit on a weekend?
There is no direct service between Yorkdale and Bradford at any time; on weekdays you can take a bus from Yorkdale to Newmarket to connect with the bus/train to Bradford. On weekends you would probably be better off going to Union Station to take the bus to Bradford - it's faster and cheaper than taking TTC/YRT to Newmarket to connect with the GO bus there.

How long will it take me to drive to Kitchener from downtown Toronto?

I will be staying at a hotel in down town Toronto, and need to be at an appointment in Kitchener before 8am. I've never been to Ontario before, so what time do I need to leave by to play it safe getting there in time. I've heard the 401 gets crazy busy during rush hour. Thanks! How long will it take me to drive to Kitchener from downtown Toronto?
The approximate distance from Downtown Toronto to Kitchener is 110 km/66 miles. It would take you about 1 hour and 15 minutes to drive in good driving conditions.

You should estimate about 2 hours and 30 minutes - 3 hours during rush hour, as your average speed will be about half than usual.

Therefore, you may want to depart Toronto by 5 or 5:30 am just to be safe. You are likely to arrive by 7:30 am.
If you can....get a hotel in Kitchener. Believe me it's not worth the hassle coming from Toronto. If you're not familiar with the area...the traffic is horrendous. How long will it take me to drive to Kitchener from downtown Toronto?
seriously one can't predict cuz Hwy 10 is always blocked during rush hour and it shall take only one crash to bring the traffic to a crawl. So leave as early as possible! Best of luck
Correct the 401 is a aprking lot from 6 am to 10 am M-F, why not take, Gardener Exspwy to HWY 427 to Hwy 7 and follow it, it goes right through K.W and merges with HWY 8 to Stratford outside of it, and it is a bit faster, it is a rural highway so the posted speed limit for a rookie might be a bit slower.

If you have a laptop and want to Google or Yahoo MapQuest the journey, just add HWY7 into your statement.
If I were you I would leave at 5:30 am. It is very unpredictable on the 401, one crash and you are stuck for hours. Also there is construction on Highway 8 near Kitchener, which you will have to drive through. Better safe than sorry....if early, time to have a relaxing coffee. Best wishes.

How much would utilities be in a small one bedroom apartment in Toronto?

I'm considering moving into a one bedroom apartment downtown Toronto, but the ones I'm interested in don't come with utilities. Roughly speaking, how much would utilities be on average? I know it depends on the person, but obviously I would be a little bit more cautious in terms of my use of electricity and heat so use wouldn't be too extensive.

I've heard that it should cost roughly 80 dollars a month or more.

Thanks for all of the advice! How much would utilities be in a small one bedroom apartment in Toronto?
Estimating the utility bill for one bedroom apartment will be much easy if you mention the appliances you have. But mostly it range 80 to 100 dollars a month. But this can still be reduces if you know how to save electricity.

Can someone who lives in Toronto post a pic of their utility bill?

I need it for an environmental project. You can blur out your information if you wish, I'm just interested in what you consume, etc. I'm using it to show what the average Toronto resident consumes as opposed to the average New York resident. If you could post a link to where I could find an example bill, that would be great too. 10 points to the first person who meets my requirements! Can someone who lives in Toronto post a pic of their utility bill?

You aren't going to get a job online. You need a work permit or permanent residency before any legitimate employer is going to bother with you. I don't know how long a work permit would take, but permanent residency takes years.

If you want to take Toronto transit then anywhere in Toronto will get you downtown. If you want it to be fast then you should either live close to the downtown core or along the subway line.

    http://www.toronto.ca/ttc/

GO Transit runs outside of the Toronto area as far away as Hamilton, Guelph (bus), Georgetown (train), Stouffeville, Barrie, Richmond Hill, Oshawa, etc.

    http://www.gotransit.com/

The Greyhound Bus can pick you up from Kitchener but this is an hour and a half ride only if the weather is good.

    http://www.greyhound.ca/en/

My suggestion is to live as close to the downtown core as you can. It makes commuting much easier. How far away from downtown Toronto can I live in?
You can even live anywhere that's not downtown, for example, in the west end of the city, Etobicoke, and take a bus or walk to Kipling subway station, or whichever closest to you. If Scarborough, which is east end of the city, there are Kennedy, Warden, Victoria Park subway stations, especially RT routes. It's all up to you where you want to be, and how you want it to be. It also depends on rental inquiries. Such as a 1 bedroom, say... 650.00, and close to bus stop, then you're in luck. Hope this helps.
The subway is the fastest/easiest way around. I'd stay near the subway line. For me, from yonge/Davisville to Union durring morning rush hour was about 20-25 minutes by Subway. From the west end, from Islington/Bloor to Union was about 45 minutes by subway.

The other alternative is the GO train. I used to take that fairly regularly, I would get the Lakeshore eastbound train from Mimico (in south Etobicoke) and be a Union station in less than 15 minutes. If you have the kind of job where you know you are going to start and finish at pretty consistant times then the GO is a great option. However if you have the kind of job the you frequently need to stay late then it's propably not so good as the schedule is pretty limited sometimes and before or after rush hour it's pretty much one train an hour. It is fast though if the schedule works for you. All the shedules and routes are on there website.

Also, maybe this isn't for everyone but I used to ride my bike to work a lot in the spring/summer/fall, it was great. about 80% of my ride was right along the lake %26amp; out of traffic. I could get to downtown from Lakeshore and Islington (south Etobicoke) in about 35-40 minutes, of course you'll need shower facilites at your work to make this option feasable.

Here's a bike path map if your interested:

    http://www.toronto.ca/cycling/map/

Also, I think Capri's time estimates are a little low, I personly do not know anyone who could get from Don Mills and Eglington to downtown on public transit in 15-20 minutes.

    Good Luck.

How does the winter in Winnipeg compare to a winter in Toronto?

I'm moving up there to go to the University of Manitoba pretty soon, but I'm terrified of the cold. I can survive a Toronto winter, is winter in Winnipeg really that bad? Do I need to buy long johns and big ugly winter boots and a big ugly winter jacket? How does the winter in Winnipeg compare to a winter in Toronto?
Temperature wise, it's definitely colder. Otherwise, it's perspective. Winnipeg is definitely colder, but if you're dressed properly it's really not that bad. However the two cities have different kinds of cold. Toronto is more damp and -10 there can feel really cold. While Winnipeg is more dry (lot's of static in the winter) and -10 is considered, and feels quite mild. Although it's usually colder than that, we have been having weird winters lately. We'll go through periods of extreme cold and periods of unseasonably high temps.

Just make sure you have a toque, gloves, and a warm jacket. Boots aren't totally necessary if you plan on driving everywhere. But if you're walking a lot, a good pair of waterproof, lined hiking boots will be a more fashionable alternative to a massive pair of sorels (although they are the warmest). There are also a lot of very nice, warm winter jackets available.

Your car should have it, but make sure you have a block heater. Your car will love you for it.

Other than that, Winnipeg is a great city with a bad rep for crime. Let me quickly say this; yes, we have murders. However, most are the result of alcohol fueled parties or are gang related. And almost all are centralized to one or two particular areas of the city. Don't go to any parties or buy any drugs in those areas and your chances of encountering violence reduce tenfold.

Have fun, and welcome to Winnipeg!

oh yeah, i forgot. Be prepared for a lot more snow!
    Thanks a lot!

How does the winter in Winnipeg compare to a winter in Toronto?
It can be terribly cold in Winnipeg. Be prepared to dress warm!!! You'll get used to it though!!!! Look for the positives and enjoy your time their!!!
They have not nicknamed the city "WINTERpeg" for nothing! Manitoba has documented some of the coldest winter weather in all of Canada. Perhaps the only places colder are in the Northwest territories and Nunavut.

From 1961 to 1990, the mean (average) temperature for January in Winnipeg was -17C and that is without the wind chill factor. (That's actually zero fahrenheit for our American and British readers...)

My suggestion is be prepared. Get the long johns, good boots, a toque or at least a jacket with a fur-lined hood, and some winter gloves or mittens. You will be so happy you have them on that first December or January day when the radio tells you that the weather is equivalent to -45C because of the wind!
It gets cold here, but we survive, it is a dryer cold so it doesn't go as deep into the bones. We know how to plow snow, we have never considered calling the army after a snow fall like Toronto was going to.

Compared to Winnipeg, Toronto doesn't have winter.
I have never been to Winnipeg in the Winter. I Toronto it can be damp cold and wet. at -10c In areas further from Toronto it can be cold dry and still snowy. From what I have heard about the dry cold of the prairies I think that you will be cold But Toronto is a great place to visit and see any season. by the way I live in Kingston. I hope that I helped.
They don't call it Winter-peg for no reason. Winnipeg winters are cruel.
I have visited and worked for 4 months in Winnipeg, it gets a bad rap as being very cold, but to the people who live there they are accustom to it, I lived in Edmonton AB for 3 years back in the early 1980's, and it go to be minus 40 with the wind chill, I could have skated home, they do not use salt on there road.

Winnipeg because of its geographical location gets alot of the winter storms from the direct northerly flow acrossed the Prairies. You will need to dress warmly from late October until mid to late March, but they have lots of discount stores like in Ontario to buy the winter gear you will need, after the first year you will be use to it and feel warm when you visit T.O., I did!!
i live here and hell yes its colder then Toronto.. we are one of the coldest around and yes you need long johns..boots only if you are gunna be outside a long time in the snow (sometimes nice to have in your car if it breaks down) and a big ugly winter jacket lol once you get used to it though you are all good.. i've been living here my whole life and i'm walking around in a t-shirt and shorts at -5C.. i love the cold.. could never move to a tropical place i would miss the snow.. my body has fully adapted to it now

You can have the comparison of prices in Portland and Toronto for some every-day items here:

It is not complete, but there is enough data to give you an idea. You can even complete some of the missing prices yourself and improve the comparison.

Hope it helps. What is the cost of living compared to Portland, OR to Toronto, ON?
Taxes and housing is MUCH MUCH more expensive in Toronto versus Portland. Without naming the type of "work" that you do, no one can tell you anything about the work environment. Every industry is different. As far as the living environment, again it depends. Both Toronto and Portland are very large cities. The living environment can change block to block.

  • How long does it take for regular mail/parcel to reach Vancouver coming from Toronto?

I had an item mailed through regular mail/parcel from Toronto to Richmond. It was mailed last September 3 and up until now the items hasn't arrived yet. How long does it usually take for mail to from Toronto to reach Vancouver. Is there a lot of incidents of lost mails by Canada post? Thanks! How long does it take for regular mail/parcel to reach Vancouver coming from Toronto?
I think it takes anywhere from 8-10 business days, so you should see it getting there soon. Maybe on Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday.

I know someone who works in the postal service and she has told me countless times that buying the special express services is useless - it all goes out at the same time, on the same truck. You end up paying more for no extra speed, although it does give you the option of tracking the package because they 'check them in' differently.

    HTH
no , lost mail hardly ever happens. is this an ebay transaction?

many people on ebay do fraud. did you get a tracking number?

do you remember is it was regular or priority shipping?

Honestly, I think it should have reached them by now,.. because there is no customs or anything that it has to go through, but then again, if it was regular mail it will take i think 6-8 business days and if thats so, they should receive it on monday or tuesday.

If you need more info or if this was an ebay type transaction please contact me and i can help you figure out if it is fraud or not. How long does it take for regular mail/parcel to reach Vancouver coming from Toronto?
Should be no more than a week. I've sent mail To Victoria from Toronto that only took that long. Vancouver is the mail theft capital of Canada accoring to A Channel news.
