I live in Toronto and I'd like to get a cat. Can someone tell me what are the different costs involved? I've never owned a cat myself and hence have no idea. I'd also appreciate any tips on cat proofing my apartment. How much does it cost to keep a cat in Toronto?
Well I don't live in Toronto, but I do live in an apartment in the greater Vancouver area and the costs would pretty much be the same. I have three cats and I spend about $25 a month on food, and about $15 a month on litter, so you could divide those by three. You'll need an initial investment of about $10-$20 for a litter box and another $100-$150 for spade or neutering and vaccinations. After that cats are pretty low maintenance, If you go away for a weekend you can usually get away with filling a couple extra food and water dishes up rather than paying for a cat sitter or a kennel, it'll cost you less than $75 for annual vaccinations, and in the event he gets sick or injured cats are usually cheaper to treat than dogs. ( I just had two of my cats de-wormed and vaccinated for $120 for both) As for cat proofing your apartment there's not a whole lot you can do other than be prepared to sweep and vacuum on a regular basis and if you get the cat as a kitten try and curb him using your furniture as a scratching post early before it becomes habit. You may want to buy a scratching post or an inexpensive scratching pad and teach him to use it early. How much does it cost to keep a cat in Toronto?
This is approximately how much I'm spending on upkeep in my first year of cat ownership:
EVO dry and other food: $100
Wood pellet fuel (litter): $6
Soft Claws: $40
PetzLife oral care gel: $23
Veterinary expenses: $35
So about $17/month USD, not including things like catnip, toys, or initial costs (litter box, etc.)
