I've a PR Visa for Canada and am planning to move to Toronto in May, 2011. I'm a UX/Web Designer - Just wanted to know, how easy/ difficult it would be for me to search for jobs in Canada. Should I start searching right now or should I go there and then search? Would I be able to get into any small jobs for survival before I move to a job in my field? How easy is it to find a job in Toronto?
I disagree with Ben -- To be a "landed immigrant" it means that you already have PR. That is what a landed immigrant status is. Immigrant = "Permenant Resident" You can't have a visitor's visa and then get a PR unless you are sponsored. You can definitely get a PR before you come to Canada, that is the usual case, unless you are sponsored, then you can remain in Canada under a special TRP visa and then apply for permanent residency - though this is rare.
Aside from that, the IT Field is pretty competitive. How easy is it to find a job in Toronto?
Fist I question your statement that you have a PR (Permanent Resident) visa for Canada - and ask your question. To get a PR visa you must first have arrived as a landed immigrant and THEN have applied for that visa.
OK, semantics, I guess.
Looking for work in Toronto is no easier than anywhere else in the world. Every open job attracts scores, if not hundreds and hundreds of applicants.
Toronto is a large job-market with lots going on. There would probably be a few hundred jobs listed that you think you are "perfect" for. You should start now and register yourself on all the websites that you can find have open jobs in you category. Do three complete applications per day at about 1 -2 h spent on the computer to do it right. I don't give you much hope by just going to potential employers and trying to find their HR departments. Most companies don't care about personal applications. - It is all done via internet and their own database search algorithms. If you are "absolutely right", you may stand a chance of being contacted.
The appearance, set up and accuracy of your resume is of UTMOST importance. It could even pay to go to a professional resume writer in Canada to get your resume just right. Be absolutely honest about your immigration status and about when you will be able to come in for an interview or you may be "erased" as a not trustworthy person.
You already know about the job-sites of which there are at least 25 servicing Toronto, in various categories, sometimes overlapping each other.
To get started, google job sites toronto
It's a tough job to find a job. Only the persistent ones with lots of patience and stamina will succeed. Go for it, start now.
