Best place to buy first apartment in Toronto?

I currently am living in Vancouver, but am planning to move to Toronto for school possibly next year. However, I'm not familiar at ALL with the streets or areas. I want to avoid anything that is equivalent to East Hastings in Vancouver, obviously. If anyone could recommend an area of downtown or somewhere close to downtown, that would be awesome. Our budget is around $300,000 and we are looking for a smaller 600-700 sf condo, if that helps with recommendations. Thanks!Best place to buy first apartment in Toronto?
with 300 grand you could easily get a little bit of a bigger place nearer the end of the subway line west of TO (islington) a nice area. They are currently building beautiful new condos there right on the steps of the subway line. You say you might not need a 800 sq ft. - 1000 sq ft. place but the price are already going up in that area. With access to the subway line below, there is absolutely no problem moving around the city and no need for a car!
